Rainbow Lake 7/14/12
Wiz Kids Field Trip July 2012
Story begins at the TOP -(Scroll down to read)

As we mentioned previously, Noel, Soozie and Kama run a "Green Retreat" campground on Rainbow Lake, and have been good friends to the Wiz Kids for many years. It was our good fortune to arrive at a time when most of their early summer renters had gone and before the late summer renters began to arrive, so we had them all to ourselves for two delightful days.

We're Baaaack! The first thing we do at Camp Wakanda, after jumping on the trampolines, of course, is to jump in the lake for a refreshing swim on a hot day.

Today, the Wiz Kids have challenged Noel to a Dutch Oven cook-off. When they come in from swimming, they work together to light charcoal briquets for both dutch ovens.

Wiz Kid Qua-Fiki's entry will be a meatloaf ring, surrounded by fresh carrot chunks, onion slices and potato wedges. Thanks to Aunt Mary for providing them with all the fixings.

Their secret ingredient, provided by Cooking Consultant Aunt Mary, is Sweet Baby Ray's Honey Barbeque Sauce.

Noel's entry is made from a cut up chuck roast, combined with sweet potato chunks, carrots and other veggies from his backyard garden.

Both dutch ovens are covered and set on top of hot charcoal briquets, while more hot charcoal briquets are arranged on the tops of the ovens. Now there is nothing to do but wait and see what happens in about an hour.

The old folks can sit around and chat for an hour, but in a very short time, the Kids are tired of sitting and listening, so they begin to look for some action.

Fortunately, there's always plenty to do at Camp Wakanda. Yesterday they tried the stand-up paddleboards, so today they go out in kayaks.

When the dinner gong sounds, the boys tie up the boats and head back to the campfire for a delicious supper. Who knows who won? Everyone tasted from each dutch oven and it was all good.

For dessert, there were S'More's, made on Noel's S'More "Machine" which toasted the crackers and chocolate while marshmellows were roasted over the fire.

Kama brought out a flute for Fred to play, and he played a solo, with Jim strumming along on the guitar for background. The night ended with more singing, playing instruments, telling jokes, and saying good bye, because this was our last night in the Adirondacks.
