Fall 2010 Football Season

Wiz Kid Qua-Fiki was kept busy every week-end during the Fall Football Season taking photos and videos of the East Orange Unified Marching Band. This is one of his photos from the Westside High game (10/08/10). Both he and Ee-Gee Fiki were kept very busy in this way. You can see more of his photography and videography work on the Band's Web site.

It's all about balance. I don't know if Wiz Kid Ee-Gee-Fiki and Qua-Fiki got the idea from the latest Karate Kid movie or from attending the UniverSoul Circus, but both have begun doing a lot of practice work balanced on high places, like the top of the monkey bars in Grove Park. They not only practice juggling while balancing, but also toss a football around while sitting atop the tallest structures in the area.

Now they are talking about stilt walking (having seen stilt walkers and dancers in the recent African Heritage Parades), and learning how to walk a tight rope... I assume while juggling.

Wiz Kid Qua-Fiki attended a KidBiz Magic Lecture given by David Ginn in Rutland, Vermont. During the lecture, Qua-Fiki got to help David and had some fun while learning new magic and business techniques to use in his own shows.

Wiz Kids Qua-Fiki and his little brother Za-Fiki attend the UniverSoul Circus in Newark, NJ. Sitting next to them is Wiz Kid Jim, the Clown in Brown, and next to him a member of the East Orange Unified Marching Band, Piccolo player Allan Theodore. Wiz Kid Director Fred Goode took the photo, so he was there also, but not in the picture.

The kids were having a good time, but Fred and Jim were studying everything, from the way the Circus props were organized, to the sound system, lighting system and audience control systems. Maybe the Wiz Kids will be taking to the road again in their own Mini-Magic Circus, and a lot of this can come in handy for the future.

This year, FREE Comic Book Day came on Saturday, May 1st, along with many other competing events. Wiz Kid Qua-Fiki spent an hour or so at The Comic Book Market in Bloomfield, NJ, passing out balloons for the customary fee of a "smile from the recepient." He was prepared to perform street magic, but as you can see, the street was bare, so he stuck to balloon twisting. Then we had to run to our next "assignment." Busy, busy!

Later that evening, Wiz Kid Qua-Fiki and Wiz Kid Ee-Gee-Fiki were photographing a Benefit Concert of the East Orange Unified Marching Band at Cicely Tyson School in East Orange for the East Orange Interactive Museum and the Band Parent Association. During intermission they "took a break" from their photography jobs to become Wiz Kids again and made balloon hats and animals for most of the kids attending the concert. Unfortunately, all you can see of Ee-Gee-Fiki is his plaid shirt behind Qua-Fiki, but he worked just as hard.

Wiz Kid Qua-Fiki is now working on mastering the art of juggling clubs, while Ee-Gee-Fiki is starting in on the rings. Today, Ee-Gee-Fiki rode his unicycle for 15 feet, proving to himself that it IS possible to master. He also rode his ripstick and juggled beanbags at the same time, another first for him.

Qua-Fiki has discovered that by teaching and helping his younger cousin in juggling and unicycling, he is learning to think about those skills in new ways that help him with the more advanced techniques he is working on. The student becomes the teacher and discovers he is once again the student.

Easter Party / Birthday Show

Qua-Fiki the Clown pays an Easter Visit to his little brother's combination Easter and fifth Birthday Party. Filling in for the Easter Bunny is Bunny-Fiki who loves to get a pat on the head from all the kids before disappearing into thin air again. To see more photos of the magic show and activities, go to Qua-Fiki's personal page.

Wiz Kids Ee-Gee-Fiki and Qua-Fiki start spring training on their ripsticks in South Orange's Grove Park. Not being able to unicycle or ripstick ride during the cold, wet winter months made them a bit rusty, but after a few hours of work, they had their skills back and were ready for parades.

Between school work, chores, and helping out at The Magic Nook, Qua-Fiki has also been writing a book. His book is called "Go Fish Card Tricks" and it contains many variations on old card tricks known to many magicians, plus some new ones that Qua-Fiki invented just for this book. Every trick in the book has a fish theme and can be performed with the Go Fish Cards that Qua-Fiki shows how to print on a computer printer.

Wiz Kids Qua-Fiki and Ee-Gee-Fiki attended the KIDabra Chapter #1 Mini-Conference in Cherry Hill, NJ. We just see their backs in this photo, as they learn to tie a quick series of knots in a rope during one of the magic "break-out" sessions. The teacher is a clown magician called "Silly Reba" (in the center, dressed in red).

"Silly Reba" was a good teacher. She made sure Wiz Kid Ee-Gee-Fiki understood all the moves and gave personal instruction to anyone who needed it.

One of the highlights of the conference was a "Birthday Party Show." Some "real kids" joined the audience of magicians for a demonstration of how to perform at birthday parties by Tim Sonefelt (shown on the right).

There weren't enough "real kids," so some of the young magicians, like our two Wiz Kids, got to sit up front and pretend to be "real kids." They enjoyed the show just as much as the "real kids," even though they knew how many of the tricks worked.
