Sleightly Wacky

by B. Robert Pulver

Jack B. Quick

“Jack be nimble, Jack be quick, Jack jump over the candlestick.”

This effect was inspired by the nursery rhyme above.  The Jack moves so quickly that the spectator can't keep up.  Each phase becomes progressively more impossible.  Just when it seems as if Jack has vanished completely, he turns up in an impossible location such as a wallet or even the spectator’s pocket!  The Jack even jumps right into the spectator’s own hands!  Finally, the Jack is signed.  The card is shaken rapidly back and forth causing the Jack to become visibly blurred.

Includes a bonus handling that allows you to perform this effect as a follow-on to "Jack B. Nimble."

The Effect:

Three Jokers and a Jack are displayed front and back.  The Jack is dealt face-down onto the table.  The three Jokers remaining in the hand are displayed front and back.  Instantly, the Jack reappears in the magician’s hand.  The card on the table is revealed to be a Joker.

The Jack is once again dealt face-down onto the table.  The three Jokers remaining in the hand are again displayed front and back.  This time something apparently goes wrong.  The Jack doesn’t appear in your hand.  When the card on the table is turned over, the Jack is GONE!  It has been replaced by another Joker.  All four Jokers are shown front and back.  The Jack has jumped into your (or the spectator’s) pocket.

This time the Jack is dealt face-up on the table.  It is turned over on the table.  The four Jokers remaining in the hand are displayed front and back.  Even though the Jack was seen face-up on the table, it has instantly jumped back to your hand.  The card on the table is revealed to once again be a Joker.

Next, one of the Jokers is dealt onto the table.  The Jack and three remaining Jokers are shown front and back.  Instantly, the Jack jumps from your hand.  All four cards in your hand are shown (front and back) to be Jokers.  The card on the table is revealed to be the Jack.

In an optional phase of the routine, the Jack on the table is turned back over (it never comes near the other cards).  The four Jokers are shown front and back.  In rapid-fire succession, the Jack jumps into your hand and then back to the table again.

One of the Jokers is then placed between the spectator’s palms.  The Jack is placed on the table or between another spectator’s palms.  The remaining three Jokers are shown front and back.  The Jack jumps directly into the first spectator’s hands!

Finally, the back of the Jack is signed.  The card is shaken rapidly back and forth causing the Jack to become visibly blurred.  The “blurred” Jack can then be handed out as a souvenir.

Note: Printing and using the "blurred" Jack shown above is optional.

Disclaimer: This effect uses an optional custom-printed gaff card. Instructions are provided for making a simple and inexpensive version. However, knowledge of and experience in card-splitting and/or other techniques for creating/printing custom-made gaff cards are recommended if a professional quality card is desired.
