Book of Card Tricks

by B. Robert Pulver

What's that you say?

You STILL hate card tricks?!?!?

Here, in volume two, you'll find some more of the miniature "stage illusion" recreations made popular in the original "I Hate Card Tricks" along with a variety of other unique effects.

You may never again utter the phrase, "Pick a card."

"...ingenious ...cutting edge."

"[Bob] is Nick Trost with an Exacto knife."

-Kenton Knepper

"...brilliant."

"...will absolutely fry a lay audience as well as many magicians."

-Marty "Martini" Grams

The Origami Queen

This effect was inspired by Jim Steinmeyer's "Origami" illusion.

A signed Queen is placed into an envelope.  The envelope is folded into a small packet.  When it is unfolded, the signed Queen is removed completely intact.  It has not been folded.

In Over His Head

The King of Hearts reenacts this death-defying escape made famous by Houdini.  The King is locked into the cell and placed “underwater.”  The spectator verifies that the King is securely shackled.  Yet, he escapes effortlessly right before the spectator’s eyes.

The spectator handles all the props before and after the effect.  You can even let them take the whole thing home as a souvenir!

Crystal Card Casket

This effect was inspired by the “Crystal Casket” illusion by William E. Robinson, better known as Chung Ling Soo.

A blank card is signed by the spectator and sealed in a clear plastic box.  The box remains in full view at all times.  A Queen is then shown and placed in the spectator’s hands.  When the spectator opens his hands, the border and indices of the card are still there, but the image of the Queen has vanished.  The box is opened to reveal that the missing printing is now on the previously blank signed card.

The Geometric Queen

This effect is based on the stage illusion, "Geometrick."  A Queen is placed in a playing card "cabinet."  Geometric-shaped tubes (square, triangle, and circle) are pushed through the cabinet.  The audience can see all the way through the tubes!  The tubes are removed.  The Queen is removed from the cabinet and shown to be whole.

Royal Interlude

This effect was inspired by Jim Steinmeyer's "Interlude" illusion.  A signed King is placed into a playing card "cabinet."  The Queen passes directly through the King.

Both cards (as well as the "cabinet") can be examined before and after the effect.

Jack B. Quick

“Jack be nimble, Jack be quick, Jack jump over the candlestick.”

This effect was inspired by the nursery rhyme above.  The Jack moves so quickly that the spectator can't keep up.  Each phase becomes progressively more impossible.  Just when it seems as if Jack has vanished completely, he turns up in an impossible location such as a wallet or even the spectator’s pocket!  The Jack even jumps right into the spectator’s own hands!  Finally, the Jack is signed.  The card is shaken rapidly back and forth causing the Jack to become visibly blurred.

Includes a bonus handling that allows you to perform this effect as a follow-on to "Jack B. Nimble."

The Fifth Beatle

Each of the “Fab Four” is pictured on a card.  On a fifth card is some unknown guy... “The Fifth Beatle.”  As you show the cards, the band members keep changing.  The cards are shown one last time and they have transformed into beetles (insects).  "The Fifth Beatle” is transformed into a Volkswagon Beetle.

A Connecticut Yankee

Four "antique" cards are shown, depicting King Arthur, Lady Guinevere, Sir Lancelot, and Merlin the magician.  A fifth card is shown: a modern Joker (man from the future).  The Joker's influence on Camelot causes the other cards to become "modernized" one by one.  The first three change into a present-day King, Queen, and Jack, respectively.  But what became of Merlin?  Legend has it that Merlin was immortal.  The Merlin card is shown again.  It now has your picture on it.

TBA

Originally, this title was just a place-holder (TBA = "to be announced").  But given my penchant for puns, I decided to stick with the name.  Only, in this case, it stands for TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY!

The spectator participates in a Three Card Monte-style routine where the stakes are really high!  No matter how hard he tries, the spectator can't avoid the bomb.  You reveal the reason... all the cards have changed to bombs.  Just to make things fair you give him one last chance.  Not only does the spectator choose a bomb, it has exploded and made a mess of the other cards!

Girls Gone Wild!

In this "naughty" effect, Jokers represent guys on spring break in search of some ladies.  You alternate between showing Jokers and Queens.  For the shocking finale, you show (in perhaps the most revealing revelation ever) four TOPLESS Queens!

Also includes a 100% clean version ("Totally Wild Jokers") with a Poker theme.  Jokers change into five different cards and back.  Then they change into a Royal Flush with different color backs!

Printing Your Own Custom Cards

Many of the effects I’ve published recently require custom-made gaff cards.  I’ve been experimenting with a number of techniques to make high quality custom cards at home.  The steps outlined in this article will allow you to create custom cards (using your home computer and ink jet printer) that match the look and feel of a standard playing card quite nicely.  This article is provided FREE with the purchase of any of my effects that requires a custom printed card.

Disclaimer: Some of these effects require custom-made gaff cards. In that case, instructions are provided for making simple and inexpensive versions where needed. However, knowledge of and experience in card-splitting and/or other techniques for creating/printing custom-made gaff cards are recommended if a professional quality gaff card is desired. The effects that require gaff cards are noted in the detailed descriptions under INFO.
