In the Memoirs of Robert-Houdin there
is a description of an effect performed by Robert-Houdin in 1846
that can only be described as an experiment in time travel back
to the time of the alchemist Cagliostro. In 1960, Robert Harbin
re-enacted his own version of the effect on television, going
back in time to Robert-Houdin. We examine both effects and then
come up with a new simplified version, "touched by a
wizard." So whom shall we go back in time to visit? You
decide.
The general idea:
Personal and easily identifiable objects from the present are
magically returned to the past, where they are concealed (by some
famous magician of the past) in an antique chest, the location of
which is chosen by lot by the present company. The chest is dug
up or retrieved, showing signs of great age. Inside there may be
other chests, but eventually a package is found along with a note
from the famous magician of the past. Inside the package are the
vanished items. A prediction or two may also be included, or the
effect may just work with a prediction.
