Magi-tronics Book 1

These effects all require some knowledge of electronics. It is assumed you know how to solder electronic components and can read simple electronic diagrams. It is not really meant for beginners, although you have to start somewhere. If you enjoy hanging around Radio Shack or other electronic stores, and know the difference between a diode and a transistor you might be able to build these projects. The authors will endeavor to help make things clear, but they can't come to your house and hold your hand.

The purchase of any of these e-Books entitles you to construct one item for your own personal use. If you are interested in acquiring a manufacturing licence please contact the author via the Magic Nook. Copying and resale of any e-Book is prohibited by International Copyright law.

Message from Jolyon Jenkins

The Magic Nook specialises in instructions for Do-It-Yourself magic, and that includes the Magi-tronics items on this page. I don't normally sell the finished products - because although the e-Books are cheap, my time is not, and it's not likely to be commercially viable for me to go into production. On the other hand, I do occasionally have a prototype or a one-off project for sale, and when I do, you'll find it on the Alchemy Moon website:

http://www.alchemymoon.com/market.html

usually in the Flea Market section. Take a look round while you are there - there are many interesting and unique artefacts for curious minds.

This page contains effects for those who like to "tinker" with magic, electronics, and things that go "bump" by themselves.

Note: All the items on this page are e-Books (pdf files) of instructions for building the effects, and not the actual prop itself. You make the devices following the author's photos and instructions and get the parts from sources suggested by the authors.

Electronic Gadgets NOT from The Magic Nook, but of possible interest to Magi-tronic Magicians.

How does it work? When do I get my purchases? How are they delivered? Where is everybody?

Click on the pictures or the INFO buttons for a brief description of the effect from the article.

Once you learn the secret, you cannot unlearn it, so you can't request a refund.

Self-Lighting Candle
by Jolyon Jenkins

In The Wizards' Journal #4, there is an e-Book showing how to make a self-lighting candle that requires you to push a button or work an on-off switch to light a candle electrically. Jolyon Jenkins takes the concept a step further and provides detailed plans to build a radio control receiver into a pillar candle and link it to a keychain transmitter so you can light the candle remotely. So really, it is a Self-Contained Self-Lighting Radio-Controlled Candle. Now that's spooky!

Note: As with all the other items on this page, this is an e-Book of instructions for building the effect, and not the actual prop itself. You make the device following photos and instructions and get the parts from sources suggested by the author. The purchase of any of these e-Books entitles you to construct one item for your own personal use. Automatic Falling Wall Frame
by Jolyon Jenkins

Hanging on the wall of the seance room is a frame containing a photo or painting of your choice. When you decide the time is right, when a sign from the spirit world is needed, for example, the frame suddenly falls off the wall. That's it! That's all it does. But if you know how to milk that event for all it is worth then this is for you. The Magi-tronic "stuff" is built right into the frame so all you have to do is hang it on any wall and trigger the radio control when you want it to fall.

Note: As with all the other items on this page, this is an e-Book of instructions for building the effect, and not the actual prop itself. You make the device following photos and instructions and get the parts from sources suggested by the author. The purchase of any of these e-Books entitles you to construct one item for your own personal use. Timed Falling Desk Frame
by Jolyon Jenkins

By popular request, we offer a falling desk frame, but just to give it a new "twist" this project has two special features that the others don't; a timing mechanism, and an invisible "on/off" switch to start the timer secretly. Even if you don't need a falling desk frame, you might want to use some of the electronics in other projects, such as putting the self-lighting candle on a timer which is invisibly activated whenever you want.

Note: As with all the other items on this page, this is an e-Book of instructions for building the effect, and not the actual prop itself. Radio Controlled Spirit Bell
by Jolyon Jenkins

Unlike Spirit Bells costing hundreds of dollars, you can make this yourself from parts costing less than $40.00 (internet sources included for electronic parts). The tiny bell hangs on a simple wood construction which can be put together by a spectator, and afterwards taken apart by a spectator. On command, the bell rings to answer questions (once for yes, twice for no ) to reveal numbers, or locate playing cards, etc.

Note: As with all the other items on this page, this is an e-Book of instructions for building the effect, and not the actual prop itself. Swinging Spirit Bell
by Jolyon Jenkins

Unlike Spirit Bells costing hundreds of dollars, you can make this yourself from parts costing about than $40.00 (internet sources included for electronic parts). The tiny bell swings from a string mounted on a simple wood construction which can be put together by a spectator, and afterwards taken apart by a spectator. On command, the bell rings to answer questions (once for yes, twice for no ) to reveal numbers, or locate playing cards, etc.

Relightable Radio-control Self-lighting Candle
by Jolyon Jenkins

Item 1, the Self-Lighting Candle, is a good project for beginners, but the candle is limited in that it lights once, then needs to be completely reset to light again. This Relightable RC Candle overcomes that limitation. You can light the candle remotely, blow it out, and then light it again, several times within the same act. The remote control electronics are the same, but the ignition technology is completely different and, I think, novel. It is also not a project for a beginner.

Note: As with all the other items on this page, this is an e-Book of instructions for building the effect, and not the actual prop itself. Mental Affinity
by Jolyon Jenkins

Mental Affinity is also not a project for a beginner. It requires some soldering and construction work, as well as some knowledge of electronics, switches and other electronic parts.

You explain that every person has an affinity to a particular color (or shape or symbol, etc.) and that you will try to work out the spectator's affinity through your mental powers alone. Using equivoque, you invite her to choose one of two identical boxes, and to take from her box whichever color counter she is most attracted to, and hold it concealed in her hand. You may even leave the room while this happens. After some cogitation you remove a counter from the box she left you. Each of you opens your hand and the two colors (or shapes, symbols, etc.) are revealed to be identical.

Note: As with all the other items on this page, this is an e-Book of instructions for building the effect, and not the actual prop itself. Ghost Frame
by Jolyon Jenkins

Ghost Frame is also not a simple project, but it does not require any soldering (except as an option). It requires some construction work, as well as some knowledge of electrical wiring, switches and other electric parts, but uses no true electronics parts in its construction.

Ghost Frame takes the Card Frame effect a stage further and allows a card, or any other picture, to appear slowly and visibly, under the noses of the audience. The appearance of the picture is slightly like a photograph developing in a darkroom, although some bits of the picture tend to appear before others, leading to a “can you see what it is yet?” experience. The speed at which it happens depends on several variables – at its fastest it can be around 15 seconds, or it can take several minutes. You can also make the image fade again.

Note: As with all the other items on this page, this is an e-Book of instructions for building the effect, and not the actual prop itself. Instant Flash
by Jolyon Jenkins

This is an effect based on the FISM flash, originally created by John Cornelius (1985). This has long been off the market but there are some other commercial versions of the same effect for sale, mostly selling for about $80. You can make it yourself for much less.

Simply – when the magician performs an effect (e.g. coin vanish, card flourish, production), a burst of bright white light appears from the magician's body (or anywhere else you want). Most of the commercial versions of the effect, including the original, are a bit cumbersome and bulky, but I will show you how to recreate the trick in a much more convenient form, as well as make it capable of radio control so you can be well away from where the flash takes place, if you wish.

Note: As with all the other items on this page, this is an e-Book of instructions for building the effect, and not the actual prop itself. You make the device following photos and instructions and get the parts from sources suggested by the author.
